Dominic Lewis – Founder
Dominic founded The Finishers Company in 2013, after a long and varied career that has spanned the restoration and finishing industry.
His first job after completing his MA in Fine Art at the Slade was the highly prestigious task of gilding the gates of the Tower of London, where he was fortunate enough to work with an English master gilder of great experience and renown, under whose guidance he perfected the techniques of this venerable art form. He spent five years working on a range of restoration projects with London’s livery companies – the city’s ancient trade associations and guilds – including Skinners Hall, Vintner’s Hall, Pewterer’s Hall (where he project managed the whole refurbishment) and Clockmaker’s Hall. The influences of the renowned master gilder and the Livery Company ethos have greatly informed both why The Finishers Company was founded, and the way that it operates – emphasising the pursuit of artistic excellence, utmost respect for heritage and tradition, sharing of knowledge and developing new skills, and working as a supportive team.
Dominic has a broad range of experience across all the logistical parts of restoration and construction projects, as a site manager, project manager, senior manager and director, giving him an unrivalled understanding of every stage of the process.
Believing very strongly that fine art and commercial projects go hand in hand, Dominic, like many of The Finishers Company, continues his art practice alongside his Finishers work, showing both nationally and internationally. He was shortlisted for the John Moore Art Prize in 2011.
